Ever since the iPhone was announced, Apple has used the name John Appleseed many times in its demos and ads. But just who is this John Appleseed guy?
Well, according to his Wikipedia entry,
John Appleseed, born John Chapman (September 26, 1774–February 18, 1845), was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced the apple to large parts of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He became an American legend while still alive, largely because of his kind and generous ways, his great leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance of apples.
He was so popular that a festival is held in his name every September in Johnny Appleseed Park, Ohio.

One of the main concerns expressed by new Mac OS X users relates to Finder. On the Windows side, users can view thumbnails and slideshows of their images from their Windows Explorer window. On Mac OS X however, many new Mac users do not realise that they can have this very same functionality right from within Finder.
Granted, Mac OS X also ships with iPhoto which is miles ahead of Finder or Windows Explorer for managing your photos.But nonetheless, sometimes it’s just convenient to be able to view a slideshow or thumbnails right from within Finder.

If you enjoy using tabs in Safari or in Firefox, you will be glad to know that Mac OS X’s Preview.app offers a very similar feature for images. By default, Preview will open a window for each image that you open. However, Preview.app is also able to display multiple images in a single window. You simply need to set this in the Preview.app Preferences.

Today I want to talk about a nice free (donationware) little menu-bar app that I have been using for quite some time – Library Books. In a nutshell, if your school, college or university library has a website you can log in to and view your library book loans etc, then this app should be able to do it too (their website lists the known supported libraries across the world, my university is not listed but it worked just fine; it uses the Talis Prism library software). The menulet (AKA menu-bar button) for this app is a star and will turn red to warn you just before books are due to be returned (you can choose how many days before).

That’s right folks, my MacBook demands to have 4TB (no typo here, that’s Terabytes or 4000 GB) of space!
This happened when I tried turning on OS X’s File Vault’s feature, which (when it works) automatically encrypts and decrypts the contents of your home directory in real time.

A lot of you will probably have seen the WWDC keynote by now. If you haven’t yet, you can stream it off
Apple’s website.
As Jobs introduces Leopard (29mins08secs), he first says that there are some features he cannot show at the Keynote, in case Microsoft have their photocopiers on the ready! But did Apple’s Vice President for Platform Experience almost let out one of those features?
It might just be me being a bit too keen on an update to the Finder but if you forward to 36mins12secs, Scott Forstall (VP Platform Experience) is about to give a demo of Time Machine. He says:
“I’m gonna bring up the Finder. So, this is a standard Finder…”
Could this be a hint at the existence of the non-standard Finder in Leopard that is currently TOP SECRET? I guess only time will tell.
