Slideshow within Finder and Preview.app

Written on September 11, 2007 – 6:42 pm | by ash.matadeen |

slideshow.pngOne of the main concerns expressed by new Mac OS X users relates to Finder. On the Windows side, users can view thumbnails and slideshows of their images from their Windows Explorer window. On Mac OS X however, many new Mac users do not realise that they can have this very same functionality right from within Finder.

Granted, Mac OS X also ships with iPhoto which is miles ahead of Finder or Windows Explorer for managing your photos. But nonetheless, sometimes it’s just convenient to be able to view a slideshow or thumbnails right from within Finder.

Preview.app: Multiple images in a single window

Written on September 11, 2007 – 2:24 pm | by ash.matadeen |

preview.pngIf you enjoy using tabs in Safari or in Firefox, you will be glad to know that Mac OS X’s Preview.app offers a very similar feature for images. By default, Preview will open a window for each image that you open. However, Preview.app is also able to display multiple images in a single window. You simply need to set this in the Preview.app Preferences.

LaTeXiT and Pages; fixing misaligned equations

Written on August 20, 2007 – 6:43 pm | by james.lawton |

This follow-up post shows how to fix the placement of inline LaTeX equations placed in Pages.app by the LaTeXiT.app application on Mac OS X. This issue was highlighted in a comment by reader Fabien. By default, the image that has the latex equation will be embedded in the document slightly too high (as shown in the comparison below). That is to say that the baseline of the equation doesn’t match the baseline of the rest of the text.

Caring for your notebook battery

Written on August 6, 2007 – 8:25 pm | by ash.matadeen |

battery.pngWhether it’s the battery in your iPod, MacBook or even iPhone, the fact is that the battery will eventually wear out in a few years and lose its ability to hold charge. In most cases, when this happens, you’ll either replace the battery or send it back to Apple to have them put a new one in or even replace the device altogether with a newer model. Each of these options cost quite a bit of money. Wouldn’t it be nice to prolong the life of your batteries as much as possible?

Well, here are some tips on how you can care for your batteries.

Library Books.app – Interface with your library’s online catalogue

Written on August 1, 2007 – 9:56 pm | by james.lawton |

Today I want to talk about a nice free (donationware) little menu-bar app that I have been using for quite some time – Library Books. In a nutshell, if your school, college or university library has a website you can log in to and view your library book loans etc, then this app should be able to do it too (their website lists the known supported libraries across the world, my university is not listed but it worked just fine; it uses the Talis Prism library software). The menulet (AKA menu-bar button) for this app is a star and will turn red to warn you just before books are due to be returned (you can choose how many days before).

Review: The STM Laptop Sleeve (for MacBooks, MBPs and PowerBooks)

Written on July 29, 2007 – 8:11 pm | by james.lawton |

We have talked about MacBook sleeves in the past when we reviewed the Tucano Second Skin. Today I will talk about another sleeve manufacturer, STM (Standard Technical Merchandise; you can see why they call themselves STM!) who haven’t been as well known (they are an Australian company) but make some great cases. I will be reviewing their STM “Glove” sleeve for my 12″ PowerBook (I know, it’s old but I can’t bear to part with it until Apple release a new sub-notebook!)

Combine multiple windows into one in Safari 3

Written on June 29, 2007 – 9:00 pm | by ash.matadeen |

The all new Safari 3 beta (also available for Windows), features tab-dragging capability; you can drag tabs in a Safari window either to re-arrange them or to convert a tab into a separate window.

This is all nice but what if you have multiple Safari windows opened on your desktop and you want to combine them all into one?
